The following tribute to Andy Ripley is reprinted by kind permission from www.worcestershire.greatbritishlife.co.uk (October 2010 Edition) The Guide to being a healthy man A brief guide to the top five diseases of men and where to get help locally Former Rugby Union International star Andy Riplcy lost his battle with prostate cancel earlier last year. In his later years he worked tirelessly to educate men about the importance of seeking help with seemingly trivial symptoms andwas a supporter of screening for prostate cancer. Two years ago Andy Ripley spoke about his experiences at Kidderminster Town Hall, saying; "Dare we Hope? We dare. Can we Hope? We can. Should we Hope? We must. We must because co do otherwise is to waste the most precious of gifts, given freely by God to all of us. So, whcn we die, it will be with hope and it will be easy and our hearts will not be broken," Around 32,000 men arc diagnosed with prostate cancer each year in the UK, three times the number diagnosed 30 years ago. Symptoms: *pain or difficulty when passing urine *passing urine more frequently than usual, and especially at night *rarely, blood in the urine or sperm. In Worcestershire the Kidderminster and District Prostate Cancer Support Group has been offering prostate screening. The screen is a blood test for prostate specific antigen (PSA), a protein that is released by the prostate gland, Raised PSA levels may be a sign of cancer, or another prostate condition such as infection or a benign condition where the prostate gland becomes enlarged. The test is controversial, and not offered routinely on the NHS, because two out of three men with a raised PSA will not have prostate cancer and up to one in five men with 'normal' PSA levels turn out to have the disease. However, PSA tests when analysed and followed up by a specialist ia urology are a vital tool in detecting rhe disease. Tlie Kidderminster group offers PSA testing for free (although a donation is welcomed) to men attending its quarterly talks and meetings at the Town Hall. Around 160 men have PSA tests at each meeting and 90 per cent are in the normal range, five per cent arc borderline, and a further five per cent have significantly high levels of PSA. Follow-up of this group has found that the majority had early prostate cancer. Coatact: Kidderminster and District Prostate Cancer Support Group P.O. Box 3854 or go to www.kidderminsterpcsg.com
